Prof Len Scott

What's the talk about?

As part of the Festival of Social Science, Aberystwyth Skeptics in the Pub moves to the Theatre Bar at the Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, for a one-off presentation and debate featuring Len Scott, Professor in International History and Intelligence Studies.  Len will explore intelligence is represented in various contemporary contexts.  His thesis will revolve around the idea that how we frame our academic studies shapes the questions we ask and (sometimes) the answers we receive. It also reflects our implicit (or explicit) ideological and ideational assumptions. The practice of intelligence has received unprecedented scrutiny in the UK in the last decade, with the war on Iraq, the atrocities of 9/11 and 7/7, and controversies over human rights and the ‘war on terror’. The study of intelligence has matured in the UK, and now embraces a variety of methodological approaches and forms of enquiry, from political science, to history to the study of spy fiction. The presentation will outline and explore themes and issues in the representation of intelligence. It aims to provide perspective and insight, stimulate debate and  generate interest in further study at all levels.
